Search Tips (How to Search)!
Not all search engines work the same, but, normally, a search is not case
sensitive. That is, you can type all in small letters, or all in caps, or
a mixture of the two. However, searching all in small letters is a good rule
to follow. Remember that all search engines search from left to right.
To search for more than one word, use AND or ANDNOT. Note that ANDNOT is
typed as if it were one word. You can use an asterisk for missing parts of
a word, i.e., ALTEN* should produce all towns in Germany beginning with ALTEN,
such as Altenberg, Altenheim, etc. You can search for phrases by placing
your inquiry within quotation marks: "Johann Sebastian Bach", for example.
Here are some other examples:
Friedrich AND Schmidt will find all documents in which those two
names appear, even though they may be paragraphs apart.
"Friedrich Schmidt" will find all occurrences of the name Friedrich when
the very next word is Schmidt.
Friedrich Schmidt will find any document containing either name.
Friedrich ANDNOT Schmidt finds only Friedrich.
Schmidt AND (will* OR testament*) AND Hessen will find only Schmidt
and wills or testaments in a document with the word Hessen inside, or as
a title. |
